スターハウスの断熱材（サンドイッチ断熱パネル、ワッフルパネル）は、Expanded Poly Styreneという素材からできています。EPSは南極昭和基地でも使用されている高性能断熱材です。1957年に昭和基地が建設され、40年後の1997年に材質の再検査を行ったところ、使用されたEPSは殆ど性能が劣化していないことが証明されました。また、EPS建材には、難燃材を含有した原料が使用されています。したがって単独では燃焼しません。このような性質を、「自己消火性」「難燃性」と呼びます。　通常の発泡スチロール等より燃えにくく、消防法の指定可燃物から除外されています。

断熱材の製造には、フロンなどの温暖化ガスは一切使用しません。発泡に使用されるのは炭素と水素だけからできている炭化水素です。また、パネルを燃やしても毒性のある塩化水素シアン化水素は発生しません。スターハウスの断熱材は、環境にやさしい材料だけに認められる「グリーン購入法」の基準に適合した素材です。

Expanded polystyrene―a material used at the Showa Base in the Antarctic―maintains its quality for 40 years and more

Star House heat insulation materials (sandwich insulation panel, waffle panel) are made of expanded polystyrene. EPS is a high-performance heat insulation material also used at the Showa Base in the Antarctic. At re-inspection of the material in 1997, 40 years after the Showa Base was constructed in 1957, the researchers found that the EPS quality had degraded very little. In addition, EPS is made from a material that contains a fire retardant. This makes EPS nonflammable. Such a property is called a “self-extinguishing property” or “fire resistance.”　EPS is less flammable than general Styrofoam materials and is not a designated flammable material under the Fire Defense Law.
